A BRIEF HISTORY OF DYRFAL STUD
The Everitts involvement with Registered Section C Welsh Cobs goes back to the early seventies with the purchase of Chalkhill Dragonfly at the 1972 Llanarth Sale for 380 guineas, at the start of the Tireve Stud. Dragonfly was a successful broodmare and in 1977, overall Champion Section C at the Royal Welsh Show (Synod Roger reserve). In 1978 she was champion C or D under saddle at Llanelwedd, qualifying for Olympia where she finished 3rd just before Christmas. She went on to produce an excellent colt foal four months later - early April 1979. Steve’s brother took Dragonfly with him to set up the Merioneth Stud in Herefordshire.
To restart the Section C’s, Steve & Hazel bought the yearling filly Leyeswick Lady from their friends the Giles’. Lady was by Leyeswick Flyer and out of Cwnlle Charm (Flyer’s own dam), again full of the blood of Rhystyd Prince & Geraint Brynawelon and the quality of the mountain pony Gredington Oswallt.
In 1986 Leyeswick Lady produced the strawberry roan filly Tireve Rosebud. Purchased as a foal by Steve & Hazel’s daughter Danielle, she became the foundation of the Dyrfal Stud. Rosebud won the Royal Welsh as a yearling, shown by 13 year old Dani herself, and was overall Section C champion at the Royal Show as a 7 year old as well as winning at most of the major shows of England and Wales.
In 1987 Steve, Hazel together with their children Danielle, JoAnn & Robert moved from Essex to Brynglas Farm at Llangadog in Carmarthenshire to continue breeding C’s and D’s and farm both sheep and suckler cows.
Other highlights have included Tireve Rosebud producing Dyrfal Red Rose, winning foal at RWAS, National Pony Show champion foal & Ceredigion foal show champion amongst many other prizes. She was consigned to the Autumn Builth sale where she realised the then World Record auction price for a Section C of any age of 4,800 guineas.
This year sees the Everitts campaigning under saddle again with the four year old Section C Dyrfal Tywysog Du, a son of Dyrfal Roseanne (Tireve Rosebud / Troedd-y-Mynydd Tegwen) and a full sister to Tireve Red Rose and sired by Tireve Tywysog Du. Black with 4 white socks, he is the image of his sire.
